The Notre Dame cathedral inferno one year ago (April 15, 2019) started precisely at… 6:18 pm Paris time! (Hat tip to reader Harcourt for reminding us!)
NYT (Jul 17, 2019):
After the first warning light flashed with the word “Feu,” or fire, at 6:18 p.m. on April 15, a fire security employee monitoring a control panel at the cathedral radioed a church guard by walkie-talkie, so he could go to check if there was actually a fire. This is a general French practice.
Fire broke out in the attic beneath the cathedral’s roof at 18:18 [= 6:18 pm]. At 18:20 the fire alarm sounded and guards evacuated the cathedral; a guard was sent to investigate, but to the wrong location – the attic of the adjoining sacristy – where he found no fire.
