Decoding Sunspot Observatory Mystery

What’s going on at the Sunspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico?
It’s a big mystery and there are many theories flying around including espionage, doomsday solar flares, and aliens. My view is a bit different per usual as I approach things from a multicontextual perspective. It is highly effective when dealing with “signal” events – i.e. events with multiple levels and inter-temporal implications – and this mystery certainly qualifies as one. Multicontextuality is a realm full of twists and turns, and the big twist here is that it’s surprisingly obvious. It’s “hidden in plain sight”. You just have to take a look at what’s right in front of you and see what it’s saying.
On September 6, 2018, AURA – Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy – evacuated the Sunspot Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico for unspecified “security reasons”. The facility is part of the National Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak which also includes the Apache Point Observatory nearby reportedly unaffected by the ordeal. By Friday, there were FBI agents and a Black Hawk helicopter present at the site ordering everyone out of the facility. More than a week later Sunspot remains closed and no one seems to know what’s going on. The locals are kept in the dark and the FBI isn’t talking.
Cue the X-Files music. Someone at the observatory certainly did.
Mystery is fun, but the underlying “message” is firmly grounded in science. As I said, the message is obvious:
“Sunspot is shut down”
Guess what? That’s exactly what’s happening with the Sun as we reach “Solar Minimum” in 2018!
“Solar Minimum” is the low point of a ~11-year solar cycle that solar activity follows. It’s when we see the least amount of sunspots on the face of the Sun. It’s when “sunspots are shut down”.
Looking at the graph above it’s clear we are at solar minimum right now marking the end of “Solar Cycle 24” and the beginning of the next cycle “25”. Though not officially declared yet the nadir of the solar minimum may well be taking place right now around August-September 2018 and the mysterious closure of Sunspot is its “as above, so below” companion event here on earth expressing the solar “phoenix” moment.
End of the story? Not quite.
The biggest solar flare of Cycle 24 (2008-2018) erupted just last year on September 6, 2017 which was an “X9” monster. Exactly one year before the Sunspot Solar Observatory was evacuated and shut down.
