Interdimensional Breach

Three big themes we are currently tracking converge in one movie set to be released on March 23rd.

The 3 themes are: Stargate (interdimensional portal), Contact (extraterrestrial/dimensional), and the Ring of Fire. (We could also add “Underworld” as a fourth theme but “hell gate” is largely interchangeable with “Stargate” in our model.)

And the movie is: Pacific Rim Uprising, a sequel to the 2013 film Pacific Rim by Guillermo del Toro.

The term “Pacific Rim” refers to the lands around the Pacific Ocean…

…basically interchangeable with the Ring of Fire!

The movie is called “Pacific Rim” ostensibly because the story has to do with “kaiju” – giant monsters – from the Pacific Ocean regularly devastating coastal cities while humanity tries to fight back to avoid annihilation.

It is a “Stargate” story in that there is an interdimensional portal called the “Breach” at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean allowing kaiju to come in from the other side called “Anteverse”.

It is a Contact story in that the kaiju turn out to be bioweapons grown by alien colonists in the Anteverse.

In the original movie Pacific Rim (2013) – minor spoiler alert – the humans successfully end the crisis by nuking the Breach and collapsing the interdimensional portal, preventing kaiju from entering our world again. (Or so they thought. The portal opens again in the sequel Pacific Rim Uprising, of course.)

Nuclear weapon… in the Pacific Ocean. Ringing any bells?

Though a false alarm, for a while many actually thought a North Korean nuclear missile was on its way to Hawaii, an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean/Ring of Fire.

It is also near Hawaii that heroes end up after successfully nuking the Earth’s core in The Core, after drilling deep into the Earth from the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, in effect making a “portal” like the Breach.
