Alien Virus

The hantavirus outbreak of April-May 2026 actually creates an eerie synchronicity with the Apple TV+ series Pluribus, released just months earlier in late 2025. Hantavirus is commonly associated with rodents – especially rats and mice – as the original carriers or “patient zero” vectors. In Pluribus, the mysterious extraterrestrial contagion likewise begins with a rat before spreading across humanity.

The symbolic overlap becomes more striking when combined with the fact that I’ve written previously that Pluribus appears to function partly as an allegory for artificial intelligence with emphasis on the rise of AGI, made increasingly realistic by the “agentic A.I.” systems exploding into public consciousness in 2025-2026.

The infected humans in the show effectively become a collective hive intelligence. Yet instead of behaving like traditional zombies, they act more like highly cooperative AI agents: relentlessly helpful, hyper-efficient, and instantly responsive to requests. They organize and execute tasks with uncanny speed and coordination in many scenes resembling autonomous AI systems embodied through humans. In fact the show repeatedly use the word “agency” when referring to the independence of the remaining uninfected humans. It’s a rather unusual term to use yet it directly mirrors the terminology now dominating the A.I. industry: A.I. “agents,” “agentic systems,” and autonomous digital entities capable of acting independently.

Pluribus arrived with a narrative centered on the loss of human “agency” to a hyper-connected collective intelligence – introduced symbolically through a rat-borne infection from space. Then, soon afterward, the real-world news cycle became saturated with headlines about a rodent-linked viral outbreak (hantavirus) directly overlapping Google I/O where the company went all in on A.I. with great emphasis on its agentic capabilities.
